Where and when did it all start?

Situated on 407 East Canal Street Richmond, the Richmond Ballet was founded in 1957 by a couple of art enthusiasts from the city. Three Richmond natives, Donna Comstock Forrest, Marjorie Fay Underhill and Robert C. Watkins Jr., started the ballet as the Ballet Impromptu. It was the first ballet company in the city. The Ballet Impromptu later became the Richmond Ballet.

From 1957 to 1975, the Richmond Ballet was a small company till it opened its school in 1975. In 1980, Stoner Winslett joined the company as its founding artistic director. In took Winslett only 4 years to make the Richmond Ballet the first professional Ballet Company in the state, which was later accorded the status of the State Ballet of Virginia in 1990.
