A theatrical masterpiece

The Phantom of the Opera is the creative brainchild of Andrew Lloyd Webber who provided the score of this musical and Charles Hart & Richard Stilgoe who penned down the lyrics. Stilgoe is also credited for writing the book of this show. It is based on the namesake novel written by the French journalist and author, Gaston Leroux. The show debuted in London's West End and was performed at the Her Majesty's Theatre in 1986. Choreographed by Gillian Lynne, the musical starred Michael Crawford in the title role, Steve Barton as Raoul and Sarah Brightman as Christine. This production of the show won four Laurence Olivier Awards including one for, 'Best New Musical.'

In 1988, The Phantom of the Opera made its Broadway premiere at the Majestic Theatre and featured Crawford, Barton and Brightman who reprised their respective roles from the West End.
