No one can deny the fact that Michael Jordan was responsible for popularizing the NBA in the eighties and nineties. ‘His Airness’, in his 15 year career inspired an entire generation of athletes. The NBA, however was not always the league that produced the likes of Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Larry Bird and of course Jordan. In the fifties, the newly formed NBA had trouble attracting spectators. The Harlem Globetrotters changed the way basketball was played when they came on to the scene in the 1920’s. Their way of playing the sport was so far ahead of its time that people still pack venues everywhere whenever they go out to play.
The Early Days
Harlem is a neighborhood in New York City, however all the original players of the Harlem Globetrotters were born in the South Side of Chicago, some 800 miles away. Known as the Savoy Big Five in 1926, the team performed as pre show attraction primarily at the Savoy Ballroom. When a pay dispute erupted in 1928, many players left and formed their own team calling themselves the Harlem Globetrotters.
Comprised mostly of African American Players, the Harlem Globetrotters surprised everyone when they defeated the Minnesota Lakers. The Lakers who were the champions of the all white National Basketball League were defeated again the next year proving two things. One, the first time around it wasn’t a fluke. Second, it was time for the league to integrate African American players.
The Play
An entertaining combination of theater, comedy and athleticism, the Harlem Globetrotters have had many famous players on their roster. The players include Willie Gardner, Connie Hawkins, Wilt Chamberlain and Nat Sweetwater Clifton. After leaving the Globetrotters, Clifton became one of the first African American players to join the NBA. In other words, the Globetrotters have shaped the NBA that is now witnessed by millions around the world.
