Phantom of the Opera is a Broadway musical written by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Richard Stilgoe, and Charles Hart. It is based on the novel by the French writer Gaston Leroux, “Le Fantome de l’Opera”. It was first staged in 1986 in West End, soon finding its way to Broadway in 1988. It has won many honors including the Tony Award and the Oliver Award in the category of “Best Musical”. Michael Crawford also received a Tony for his portrayal of the title character. The musical is the longest running show to ever be on Broadway. Just last year, it staged its 10,000th performance. It is also the most popularly watched musical. On West End, it is a close second.

The story of the musical follows Christine Daae, a young soprano who as a young girl is trained by "The Phantom" and goes onto become his obsession as she grows older. What Christine does not know is what the "Angel of Music" as she calls him looks like for he keeps his face concealed with a mask. While the Phantom is falling for Christine, he watches as she falls for Raoul, her childhood acquaintance and the owner of the opera house in which she performs. It is in a dramatic on stage performance that Christine unmasks her mysterious music teacher and sees his true face for the first time.
