Opera Colorado was established back in the year 1981, a year after the original idea was brought forward by a group of local opera fans in the city of Denver. The whole idea behind opening a new opera company in this area was because they wanted to bring the world of opera entertainment to the people living in the state of Colorado and not just any opera venue, the aim behind this particular one was to make it a production house which would organize and hold a number of the most iconic opera productions that are performed at other notable venues throughout the globe. After bringing together two greats of the Metropolitan Opera; Merrill and Sherman, the opera was in business. The famous production Othello was the first ever performance held at Opera Colorado and it was opened to the audience on the Fourth of April, two years after the opera came into business. Until the year 1992, all of the main stage productions held at this remarkable venue were being performed at the Boettcher Concert Hall. This hall was located in the downtown area of the city and this trend continued up until the year 1992. Keeping in mind the growing popularity of this opera house, a third main stage was added in the shape of the great Temple Buell Theatre which opened its doors for the general public for the very first time on the second of November in 1992. It was under the stewardship of Peter Russell in 2005 when the great Ellie Caulkins Opera House auditorium was opened. At present, the opera is run by Greg Carpenter who serves as the General Director of this great opera house.
Opera Colorado celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2006 season and it continues to broaden its horizons to this very day. The opera house played host to its first foreign language production in the shape of the Dvoraks Rusalka in 2011 which is a Czech language production. It then organized a Spanish language production in the following year.
