However that is exactly what the famous Los Angeles Ballet plans to offer to The City of Angels; the amazing present of a Nutcracker, combined with the Los Angeles heritage!
The Los Angeles Ballet: The Nutcracker tickets are now available on our website! The Nutcracker is widely known to enchant audiences including adults and children for more than a hundred years now! A plethora of ballet companies perform this ballet every year, forming a fun-filled holiday tradition for families throughout the globe.
It’s a 2-Act ballet choreographed originally by the French dancer and choreographer Marius Petipa and by Lev Ivanov. The music was given originally by a Russian composer Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky. Before this production, Marius Petipa and Tchaikovsky had earlier worked together on Sleeping Beauty, another classical ballet. Additionally, the ballet’s libretto got adapted by "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and the show premiered in St. Petersburg in December 1892, with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera lolanta.
The production itself wasn’t a success; neither the audience, not the critics liked it. However, Tchaikovsky’s twenty-minute opera turned out to be a big hit. The complete Nutcracker however has enjoyed massive popularity since late 1960s. It is now performed world over by many ballet companies, mainly in the Christmas/holiday period. The score by Tchaikovsky has also become one of the most celebrated compositions, especially the portions that are part of the suite. Apart from other things, the score is primarily known for using celesta, which is an instrument that Tchaikovsky had already engaged in his lesser known ballad called The Voyevoda.
The ballet itself is based on the story of "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice", which was written by the German writer E.T.A Hoffman. Even though the stage performance today differs from the actual plot, the basic story is the same. It’s a tale of a German girl Clara, dreaming of a "Nutcracker Prince", and a fight with a "Mouse King" with 7 heads. From the opening scene till the very last tinkling notes of Tchaikovsky’s music, an exciting holiday spirit pervades through the entire performance.
When Marius Petipa got the idea of choreographing the plot into a ballet, the show got based on French author Alexander Dumas’s revision. His account replicates more of what everyone has come to love. So, at the Los Angeles Ballet: The Nutcracker show, you can follow Clara’s quests as she fights the King of rats and converts her Nutcracker into a charming Prince. They both travel to the bewitched land of a Sugar Plum Fairy, dancing snowflakes and a celebration which takes her around the globe in just one night!
The Nutcracker ballet performances usually run from the latter part of November till Christmas. So this winter, the classic holiday fairytale has come alive at the beautiful Royce Hall for its 6th season. Los Angeles Ballet: The Nutcracker show will be held at the Royce Hall at the University of California Los Angeles, which is widely known for its Romanesque revival architecture style. Built in the year 1929, Royce Hall was one of the 1st campus structures.
