It has been 45 years since Erich Segal’s “Love Story” turned the masses into weepy messes. Directed by Arthur Hiller, the catchphrase “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” became internationally popular and the actors Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw were declared the most iconic onscreen couple. The stars have reunited for another touching story “Love Letters” but this time they will bring their epic chemistry to the live stage. Written by A.R. Gurney, “Love Letters” has the Tony Award winning Gregory Mosher as its director. O’Neal and MacGraw will hit the road in 2016 on a national tour and are once again ready to set hearts a flutter. Love Letters tickets will take you on a nostalgic ride loaded with palpable spark as two epistolary soul mates present their heartbreaking thwarted love story.

Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw Reunite For “Love Letters”

In 2014, Gregory Mosher premiered Love Letters on Broadway and after receiving moderate success has now been retooled as a touring production, featuring the most romantic onscreen couple ever – Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw. Also a tearjerker, Love Letters gives the actors a second chance at love but this time as Andrew “Andy” Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner.

Childhood friends, they look back at their 50 years of friendship through a series of letters that they had exchanged over the time. Both belonged to high society families and their letter writing was a result of experimentation that started after Melissa wrote some birthday party thank you cards. Their correspondence began when they were still in second grade set in 1937. They continued to write to each other even when they went to separate boarding schools, attended college, fell in love with different people, got married, had children and later divorced. Even though life kept them apart, their connection deepened through these letters. Despite all their confusion and self-doubt, love was the dominant thread in their relationship that always drew them towards each other.

Love Letters – A Work of Deep Emotional Resonance

If you’re looking for some inspiration in your love life or want to bring that extra spark in your relationship then do buy Love Letters tickets. According to the early previews, MacGraw delivers the strongest performance of her career. Her dialogue delivery is so gripping and emotional that the audience laughs and cries along as she narrates her side.

Melissa is straightforward, tack-sharp, a rebel and witty. She is also an alcoholic and a free-spirited artist. She also hates letter writing but agrees to it because of her affection for Andrew. She effectively illustrates how much she dislikes it by staring determinedly and silently into the air, reusing to write anything especially when she’s angry at Andrew for something he’s done – like courting a new girl.

Andy is more practical and he gets to achieve everything he wants. He ends up becoming the US Senator and for appearances sake, remains married for a long time. Unlike Melissa he enjoys letter writing and finds immense freedom in it. Their beautiful and punchy exchange features roiling emotions as the letters trace the couple’s closeness, sexual awakening and the navigation of adulthood. With every letter Andy and Melissa’s bond is strengthened as they admit their love for each other but prefer to remain friends. MacGraw and O’Neal’s performance also builds as their characters age and their relationship is filled with nostalgia and regret.

Both the actors are so involved in their characters that when the end nears they are openly sobbing onstage. As the curtain is about to come down, they wrap arms around each other, kiss and let everyone know that there has always been love between them. As they walk off the stage, the audience is on its feet giving two incredible performers the standing ovation they deserve.
