Jersey Boys brings drama to the formation, journey, and eventual disbanding of the Four Seasons. It is divided into four seasons, with each having a member of the quartet as narrator. As such, Spring presented by Tommy DeVito, Summer explained by Bob Gaudio, Fall featuring Nick Massi, and Winter by Frankie Valli roll through as the story takes flight from the band’s first version, "the Variety Band". It focuses on their discovery of the prodigiously talented Frankie Castelluccio, and Tommy’s dealings and eventual troubles with mob bosses. The narrator gives personal insight on his contribution and band problems in each quarter.
Being a jukebox musical, Jersey Boys uses Four Seasons’ original songs, with music by Gaudio himself and lyrics by his famous co-writing partner Bob Crewe. The book is by Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, famous for his various Woody Allen collaborations. Jersey Boys premiered at the August Wilson Theater in October 2004.
Jersey Boys won four Tony, two Drama Desk, and one Grammy Award. 2006 and 2011 National tours followed productions in Chicago, Las Vegas, London, Sydney, Auckland, and Melbourne.
