Grease Tickets

Originally a low-budget production playing in Chicago in 1971, Grease was made into a full-scale musical, playing off-Broadway before being promptly moved to Broadway after receiving favorable reviews. It went on to become a hit show in London's West End, spawning a film classic and eventually a series of popular revivals, including the 1994 Broadway revival, and numerous sequels. Danny and Sandy, two high school students, find themselves in the midst of the flux created by the shift in social norms, with the decorum and modest mannerisms of the 1950s being an oddity compared to the rapidly modernizing teenage culture of the 1960s. They must deal with juvenile politics and ego wars as they create and sustain their romance, which Grease the musical unravels as part of the excitement of being young. The 1978 film adaptation starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta was immensely successful, becoming the highest-grossing US movie of 1978. The song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music - Original Song.

Grease the Musical won the 1972 Theatre World Award for Acting, and carried off the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography as well as for Most Promising Costume Design. Grease was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The 1994 revival also earned Grease the Musical a few Tony and Drama Desk nominations and a winning position for Brook Shields in the Theatre World Award. In 2007, the musical was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

The Broadway production premiered on June 7, 1972. Exactly one year later, Grease had its opening night in London's West End, with the lead role played by the then-budding actor Richard Gere. Subsequent productions also included Tracey Ullman. The 1994 Broadway revival included world-famous stars such as Brook Shields and Rosie O'Donnell.

Grease has been cast and recast into the molds of cinema, theatre, revivals, and sequels due to the generic appeal of its theme—coming of age, negotiating between social pressure, tradition, and personal identity.
