Following in the vein of the much more influential and popular Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize was created for the sole purpose of creating higher art. The company was formed by a talented group of performance artists - namely Daniel Cyr, Julie Hamelin and Jeannot Painchaud - in 1993. The ultimate aim of the company was to combine several disciplines of performance - such as music, dance, circus acrobatics and more - into one. This post-modern approach to theatre would then be used to create original productions that pushed the art-form further and challenged people's idea about them.
To this day, Cirque Éloize has created a total of seven productions. These shows include Rain: Comme une pluie dans tes yeux , iD, Nomade: At night, the sky is endless, Typo, Excentricus, Nebbia, and Cirque Éloize, le spectacle, along with a few others. Each show is elaborate, dynamic and entertaining whilst also being emotionally engaging, artistically relevant and thought-provoking.
Of all the shows that Cirque Éloize has staged, three - Rain, iD and Typo - have been phenomenally successful, both critically and commercially. Rain was written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, and is based around the idea of blurring the line between reality and performance. The story revolves around an everyday group of protagonists and focuses on their emotional and romantic exploits through expression and dance. Typo is about a "Chaplinesque playwright" trying to come up with an idea for a live comedy show. The show-within-a-show is presented in a traditional vaudeville format and has received universal critical praise. Lastly, iD features a storyline that centers on a futuristic society where an "omnipresence of image causes [people] to lose [their] reference points."
To date Cirque Éloize has played almost four thousand performances in more than four hundred cities across thirty six countries. The company also stages "custom made" performances for special international events, of which Cirque Éloize has participated in many. These events include the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland, Israel Festival in Jerusalem, Recklinghausen Festival in Germany, Bergen International Festival in Norway, Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogota in Columbia, the Chekhov International Theater Festival in Russia, the Beiteddine Festival in Lebanon and the Hong Kong Festival in China. Many of the company's productions, such as Rain, have toured Broadway as well, to widespread critical acclaim.
In addition to this, Cirque Éloize's shows have played in many prestigious venues across the globe, including the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Australia as well as the Barbican Theater and Sadler's Wells Theatre in England. They have also been featured in many prominent documentaries and television programs on channels like Bravo, CBC, Indigo, Prime Nights, Art TV as well as NTV in Japan.
However, Cirque Éloize's achievements do not end there, because the company has also received many accolades. These honors include the Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program or Series in 2003 as well as honors for Nomade: At night, the sky is endless and the Cirque Orchestra live tours. Perhaps the most celebrated of all of Cirque Éloize's productions, however, is Typo which earned three nominations at the 2005 Drama Desk Awards for the Broadway tour as well as five prizes at the Festival Mondial du Cirque de demain in Paris. Rain was also nominated at the 2006 Drama Desk Awards in three categories, specifically Unique Theatrical Experience, Outstanding Director of a Musical and Outstanding Lighting Design.
Cirque Éloize is now one of the premier performance troupes in the world. Their shows are on the cutting edge of contemporary art and are highly regarded all over the world. The shows are also attended by thousands of art and performance enthusiasts, who flock to the exciting displays of skill and showmanship in droves. These fans shall be happy to know that Cirque Éloize tickets for the company's upcoming shows are now up for grabs.
July 26, 2017, was a special day for Cirque Eloize as two of its members decided to spend the rest of their lives together on stage in front of the entire audience. This circus/hip-hop/acrobatic troupe show is full of surprises. Cirque Eloize will be performing in Patchogue, NY, in August 2017.
