Kelly Clarkson, Khalid and Lauren Daigle to Perform at Billboard Music Awards 2019

A number of top-notch music stars are set to perform at the much anticipated 2019 Billboard Music Awards. Five times BBMA nominated music artist Kelly Clarkson will be taking on double duties by hosting the award show as well as performing live on stage. In a recent statement, the American Idol alum said “I had so much fun hosting the Billboard Music Awards last year that I’m back for more.” Besides Clarkston, the lineup of artists scheduled to perform at the big event include Lauren Daigle, Normani, Khalid, Sam Smith and Panic! This year’s nominations have been announced and leading the way with an astounding 21 nominations is none other than the new Queen of Hip-Hop Cardi B. The 26-year-old rap superstar has been nominated for “Top Selling Song,” “Top Hot Song” and “Top Collaboration” among other categories.

Following Cardi B with 17 nods apiece are hip-hop artists Drake and Post Malone. Furthermore, Travis Scott has bagged 12 nominations and the late XXXTentacion will be up for the prize in 10 categories. Ariana Grande will be gunning for glory with 9 nominations while A Star is Born actors Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are also up for wins in multiple categories.

Did you know, Taylor Swift holds the record for winning most BBMAs? She has won 23 with Garth Brooks coming in second with 19.

History of the Billboard Music Awards

The Billboard Music Awards is affiliated with Billboard, a popular music publication, primarily known for music popularity charts. The first BBMAs made its debut in 1989 and subsequently the awards were held annually till 2006. The BBMAs were not held from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, the BBMAs were held again and have been held annually ever since.

Significance

Since 1940, the Billboard charts are the most consulted guide for an artist’s success, popularity of their albums and songs, and the ultimate measure of their standing in the music business. Winning the BBMA would therefore be one of the biggest honors for any artist. The BBMA’s, in short, celebrate the hottest music artists of the year.

Who gets Nominated

Not everyone gets nominated for the BBMAs; there’s a strict criterion. Nominated artists are called finalists and their names are finalized based on their albums and digital songs sales, touring, streaming, radio airplay and social engagement. The data is collected by Billboard, Next Big Sound and Nielsen Music. The BBMAs are based on a 12-month reporting period.

Highlight of 2016 BBMAs

The 2016 BBMA’s were held on May 22, 2016. It was the No.1 broadcast program of the day, which was watched by 9.8 million viewers. The awards were aired on ABC. The 2016 BBMAs became the third biggest ABC show ever to be watched – rating wise. A three-hour telecast, it was the top trend on many social media platforms, prompting 1.8 million tweets.

The 2016 Billboard Music Awards were hosted by Clara and Ludacris, with unforgettable performances by Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Madonna with Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Shawn Mendes and many others. However, the biggest highlight of the evening was the BBMA winners.

In 2016, Celine Dion was given the Icon Award, while Britney Spears was given the Millennium Award. There are some other special awards, which haven’t been given out lately.
