The play’s debut was in 1934 in Broadway at the Neil Simon Theater. This musical has been filmed twice and revived several times in Britain and the US. Music and Lyrics of Anything Goes has been written and composed by famous music director Cole Porter. This two-act play is based on a unique story which was the brainchild of producer Vinton Freedley. This musical is a farce set blow decks of a huge ocean liner sailing to London from New York. The story revolves mainly around the characters of Billy Crocker (assistant to Elisha and would be lover and husband of to Hope), Reno Sweeney (an evangelist turned nightclub singer and Billy’s old friend), Elisha J Whitney (a Wall Street banker Billy’s boss), Hope Harcourt (Billy’s object of affection and American debutante), Moonface Martin (a second grade gangster) and Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt (Hope’s overbearing and haughty mother). Play is all about the quest of Billy to win Hope who is already engaged Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and in this quest Billy is helped by Martin Face.

Some of the famous songs in this musical have gained worldwide popularity such as "You’re the Touch", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Anything Goes", "Public Enemy Number One", "Blow Gabriel Blow", "Be Like the Bluebird", "Gypsy in Me" and "Take Me Back to Manhattan". On its Broadway debut in 1934 Anything Goes ran 420 performances making it the fourth longest running musical in the decade of 1930. The West End production opened its doors for the audience at Palace Theater in 1935 and ran for 261 performances. In 1962 there was an Off Broadway revival at Orpheum Theater which included actors like Eileen Rogers, Kenneth Mars and Hal Linden, and it was directed by Lawrence Kasha.

In 1936, a movie of the same name was released made by Paramount Pictures and included acclaimed actors like Bing Crosby, Ethel Merman Margaret Dumont and Arthur Treacher. The second movie with the same name was made in 1965 but this time the script was changed from the original story and this script was written world famous writer Sydney Sheldon. Bing Crosby was again casted as the main lead to do the role of Billy and female leads were done by Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire. In 1954 a special version of this musical was made for TV and cast included legendary musician Frank Sinatra as Billy the hero with Ethel Merman who reprised her role as Reno.
