The story of the musical is based on a novel titled Israel Rank: the Autobiography of a Criminal which was written by Roy Horniman in 1907. The novel was also the source of inspiration for the British movie Kind Hearts and Coronets released in 1949. The inspiration for the musical comes from this movie that was adapted from the Israel Rank book. This wonderful black comedy production was done at the Ealing Studio in 1949. It starred the incomparable Alec Guinness featured as eight English aristocrats. These aristocrats stood in the way of a murderous commoner denying him his noble birthright.
