This witty musical is about a serial killer who has been denied his noble birthright. It is based on the ingeniously absurd storyline of an Israel Rank novel that inspired both the Wicked Musical as well as the classic comedy movie “Kind Hearts and Coronets”.

Presented by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is a musical comedy. The story of the musical is based on a novel titled Israel Rank: the Autobiography of a Criminal which was written by Roy Horniman in 1907. The novel was also the source of inspiration for the British movie Kind Hearts and Coronets released in 1949. The inspiration for the musical comes from this movie that was adapted from the Israel Rank book. This wonderful black comedy production was done at the Ealing Studio in 1949. It starred the incomparable Alec Guinness featured as eight English aristocrats. These aristocrats stood in the way of a murderous commoner denying him his noble birthright.

Stepping into the shoes of Alec Guinness, Jefferson Mays bring out the virtuosic comic turn in the musical. Showcasing his versatile talents, he plays the role of eight wacky members belonging to a noble family. Pulling off dizzyingly quick change of costumes and playing his character with wit makes his performance a treat to watch. This is just a part of enticement that the musical holds for the audience. The musical premiered in 2012 and made its Broadway appearance in 2013 featuring Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays along with Lisa O'Hare, Bryce Pinkham, Lauren Worsham and more.

The Broadway performances received positive reviews. According to the review in The New York Observer, the musical is “Ingenious!”. As per the theatre review by Charles Isherwood in The New York Times, the musical is bound to lift the hearts of those art lovers who have been yearning for quite a while. According to the review in The Wall Street Journal, the ambiance of the music hall is lifted to another level with the flamboyant scenery on stage done by Alexander Dodge. Categorizing Jefferson Mays as an “Ingenious, Chameleonic actor, The Hollywood Reporter praises the performance of this brilliant artist.

Repertoire of popular songs of this adorably wicked show include "I Don't Know What I'd Do" – Sibella, "The Last One You'd Expect" – Company, "Why Are All the D'Ysquith's Dying" – Lord Adalbert and Mourners and more. The musical compositions by Steven Lutvak add sweetness to the show.  Played by a wonderful pit orchestra, Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations enhance these musical compositions.

The most appealing part of "A Gentlemen's Guide To Love And Murder" is its simplicity. Darko Tresnjak, the new Broadway director presented the set in such a manner that the audience could see a stage within a stage set. The secret to this spectacular setting lies in the smart use of basic lighting and background projections. Given that Broadway theatres usually hold jukebox musicals, the Walter Kerr Theatre hold something unique. Enjoy a hysterical, fresh performance by getting A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder tickets.
