San Jose Sharks: Origins of a Proud Hockey Tradition
One of the youngest franchises in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks came into being in 1991 as one of the league's expansion teams. They were the first NHL outfit to be based in the San Francisco Bay Area since the departure of the California Golden Seals to Cleveland in 1976. The Cow Palace served as the Sharks' first home arena before they moved to the SAP Center in 1993. Known locally as the "Shark Tank," it continues to be the home base of the side from the Garden City. You can watch them taking on their opponents by getting San Jose Sharks tickets. The San Jose Barracuda are the Sharks' affiliates from the American Hockey League (AHL). Over the years, a number of talented players have suited up for both the Sharks and the Barracuda, including Nikolay Goldobin, Bryan Lerg, John McCarthy, Michael Haley, Dylan Gambrell, Jacob Middleton, and Noah Gregor.
NHL Record and Achievements
The Sharks have been a competitive team from the very beginning. It took them just three years to earn their maiden playoff berth and there has been no looking back ever since. In about thirty years of life as an NHL franchise, the Sharks have only missed out on the postseason a handful of times. They have won a significant number of honors in that time too. Part of the NHL's Western Conference Pacific Division, the Sharks have won the Divisional crown six times. A Presidents' Trophy and a Conference title are also among their list of honors. However, the team's finest hour yet was in the 2015-16 season when they qualified for the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time..
Greatest Players and Rivalries
Since the franchise's inception, many talented players have donned the Sharks' colors. Some have done so with aplomb and accomplished wonderful things in the game, such as Rob Blake, Sergei Makarov, Ed Belfour, and Teemu Selanne. The current Sharks roster also features many gifted players, including Evander Kane, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Kevin Labanc, and Marcus Sorensen, all of whom have their sights set on greater glory and are eager to bring the maiden Stanley Cup win to San Jose.
Historically, the Sharks have had major rivalries with the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks, the two other California-based outfits always locked in a battle for regional supremacy with the Sharks. Games between these sides are always intense, with local pride and bragging rights at stake.
In recent years, the Sharks have also shared a "developing rivalry" with the Vegas Golden Knights, which is expected to grow in the coming years. You can witness the next chapter of this installment by getting San Jose Sharks tickets.
