From the year of the university’s establishment till 1893, the Richmond Spiders were known as the Colts, but the name was changed after a local newspaper: Richmond Times-Dispatch started referring to Puss Ellyson, the team’s pitcher, as a spider, at that time. Supporting the colors blue and red, the Richmond Spiders’ basketball team has been able to earn the reputation of being known as "giant killers" due to their winning streaks in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The team has been able to win two of the National Collegiate Sweet Sixteen Championships in 1988 and then in 2011, six Conference Tournament Championships in 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1998 and 2011 and five Conference Regular Season Championships in 1984, 1988, 1989, 1992 and 2001. The team has appeared in a total of nine National Collegiate Athletic Association finals. The Richmond Spiders have established the record of being the only basketball team present to win twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen seed games in NCAA Championships.
The Richmond Spiders are currently coached by Chris Mooney, along with three assistant coaches; Kevin McGeehan, Jamal Brunt and Rob Jones. Mooney was appointed the head coach since 2005 and currently coaches the fifteen member basketball team. The roster consists of eight guard players that include Kendall Anthony, Luke Moyer, Cedrick Lindsay, Darien Brothers, Wayne Sparrow, Jonathan Benjamin, John Moran and Zach Chu, six front position players that include Trey Davis, Deion Taylor, Terry Allen, Greg Robbins, Alonzo Nelson-Ododa and Derrick Williams and the center position player, Luke Piotrowski.
