Almost all the good universities have their own athletic departments having different sports teams. Sports is not only an activity or an entertainment but it also keeps one healthy mentally and physically. Because of these reasons as well as the overall culture and trend of playing sports alongside studying, the sports at the university level have become vastly popular. The university level sports give the talented sports men and women a platform to excel in the field if they want to. Many great sportsmen have been automatically recruited like this and they represent the country now by playing at national and international levels.

Mississippi Rebels is the name given to the sports teams which represent the University of Mississippi. The teams were initially known as Mississippi Flood but the name changed to Rebels back in 1936. The university’s athletic department has been in picture since decades. The Rebels play in the Southeastern Conference of NCAA Division 1. Commonly known as Ole Miss, the university’s sports teams are 18 in number including both men and women teams. Basketball, Baseball, Football and Volleyball are the most dominant games being played at the university. Men’s teams include the sports including Football, Basketball, Tennis, Baseball, Golf and Track & Field. Whereas the women participate in more sports compared to men. They play Basketball, Golf, Rifle, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Tennis and Track & Field. The football team has been playing for more than a century. Having a tradition of winning, the University’s football team has won more than 600 matches so far. It has won the Southeastern Conference titles six times and the national championships three times. The baseball team has played the World Championship series 4 times, won the Conference Tournament Championship twice and the conference championships seven times. The basketball program emerged in the seventies. The women’s basketball team has participated in the NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship seventeen times and in Women’s National Invitation Tournament many times. Men’s basketball team has won the SEC Western Division five times. The tennis teams have also appeared in many championships and have won some of them. The women’s and men’s teams are equally competitive. The university athletes sum up to more than 600. The athletes got the all-conference academic honors from the year 1995-2004. Red and blue, the colors of Harvard and Yale are the university’s colors since 1893. Same colors are used for the sports teams even today. The Rebels’ most strong rivalries exist with Mississippi State Bulldogs, LSU Tigers and Ankansas Razorbacks. Colonel Reb is the unofficial mascot for the athletic teams. The song titled as Forward Rebels is the official dong of the sports teams and is played by “The March of the South” band for the teams. Dixie is another song that is being played by the band. The teams take part in many intercollegiate championships and have a tradition of entertaining the spectators with a competitive game. The basketball, baseball, football and tennis teams have given the Rebels much popularity. Other teams also play but they are not as good as these and do not have any noticeable records. The university of Mississippi has one of the oldest athletic departments which has been entertaining the students, university officials, alumni and all the sports lovers for more than hundred years.
