Miami Open Tennis hosted its initial games in the 1960s as it was the dream of the players at that time, to play an international tennis tournament in Miami. The crème of tennis players of the era - Frank Sedgman, Jack Kramer, Pancho Gonzalez, Butch Buchholz and Pancho Segura - hit the city in a station wagon and played tennis in darkened arenas. With every passing era, developments were made and passionate tennis fans invested in the tournament. Today, the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event has become one of the most popular tennis tournaments and so far an attendance of almost 300,000 people is recorded every year.
Before The Tennis Center at Crandon Park became the permanent home of Miami Open in 1987, games were first held in Delray and later in Boca Raton. With its capacity of 13,800, the center has often recorded sold out attendance. During the tournament, 12 courts in the center are used for competition rounds and 6 for practice sessions. Although Miami Open is a hard court tournament, The Tennis Center also has red clay courts for the European games and green clay courts for American championships. Other than this, the arena also boasts of two grass courts. 2014 Miami Open Tennis recorded an attendance of 306,842 for the 24 sessions played in 14 days. Judging from the rapid sales of Miami Open Tennis tickets, the figure is expected to increase in 2015.
