IndyCar has seen a lot of sanctioning bodies change hands. Tony George founded the current championship in 1996 as a competitor to CART and named it the Indy Racing League. Before the start of the 2008 season, a unified body was declared after merging the two different bodies. Since then, the series formerly known as the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Racing has come to be known as the IndyCar Series.

Its more renowned European counterpart is considered to be Formula 1, however, there are distinct differences in the types of races and the cars used between the two. For starters, the Indy car is larger and heavier than the conventional F1 car. There is a gigantic difference in price, with Indy cars being considerably cheaper than F1 cars. Unlike the custom cars in F1 made by the team that uses the car, Indy cars have a specific design with only slight variations made by the driver's team. While Formula 1 cars arguably accelerate faster than Indy cars and can attain higher top speeds.

Scottish-born driver George Dario Marino Franchitti, who represents Britain in the IndyCar series, has won the series three years in a row from 2009 to 2011. He was succeeded by American Ryan Hunter-Reay, who won the 2012 edition of the series. Points are awarded according to the position obtained in the race, with the first-place holder receiving fifty points. Subsequent positions receive fewer points. Additional points are awarded for leading a lap and bonus points for qualifying performance.

The high-speed action is set for the third Baltimore Grand Prix, which features almost a two-and-a-half-mile circuit with twelve turns. The race will consist of seventy-five laps of adrenaline-pumping speed racing. The 2013 season of the IndyCar series has seen races all over America, including venues like St. Petersburg, Detroit, Long Beach, Sao Paulo, Texas, and the Indianapolis 500.
