The Hoosiers football team played its first game in 1887 after Arthur B. Woodford, a social science teacher and graduate of Yale, introduced the sport to the university in 1885. The next few years were spent in developing the program even further and recruiting star players. However the team still struggled for consistency and managed to win its first title after almost sixty years.
