The Florida State Seminoles are the popularly known athletic teams of Florida State University, located in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1992, the university joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and participates in the Atlantic Division for sports that have been divided into a divisional system. Florida State takes part in the NCAA's Division I, with a total of 17 varsity teams - nine women's teams and eight men's teams. The women's athletic programs include swimming, soccer, softball, golf, cross country running, volleyball, track and field, basketball, and tennis; the men's athletic programs include baseball, football, tennis, track and field, golf, swimming, basketball, and cross country running. The Seminoles have won 12 team National Titles, more than 100 team Conference Titles, and several individual National and Conference Titles. Colonel Randy Spetman has been the athletic director of the Seminoles since 2008.
The university has identified itself with the heroic Seminole Tribe of Florida for almost six decades. In 1947, the student body voted to select a name for the institute and Florida State Seminoles was elected. This was to honor the strong and unconquerable spirit of the Florida Seminoles - the people referred to as the "few hundred unconquered Seminole men, women and children left - all hiding in the swamps and Everglades of South Florida" by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Thus, the use of the name by FSU tributes and indicates the strength and bravery of these people, who never submitted and ultimately persevered. The Hollywood description of the American Indians had largely influenced the images and mascots of the FSU in its early years. However, attitudes evolved and the mascots of FSU progressively adopted the correct aspects of the Florida Seminole tribe, while presenting them in a more respectful manner. The popular sports teams of the university include the basketball team, the baseball team, and particularly the football team. Ever since the addition of football to FSU's sports program in 1947, the Seminoles football team has earned increasing popularity, ultimately becoming known as a National Championship contender. To date, the team has won two national championships and twelve conference championships. This has earned the team the reputation of the leader of the ACC. Additionally, the Seminoles' baseball team is considered one of the most successful teams in the history of baseball, having made eighteen appearances in the College World Series.
Florida State University also boasts two major stadiums on its main campus premises.
Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium - named for one of the leading coaches in Division I college football, and also for President Campbell; Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium - named after Mike Martin, the long-time Seminole skipper, and also for the former coach Dick Howser. The stadium is home to the Seminole baseball team. Another one of FSU's worth mentioning facilities is the Donald L. Tucker Center, which is home to the men's and women's basketball teams.
