The History

The Quebec Nordiques began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972 and joined the NHL in 1979. The team struggled in its early years in the NHL, but had a strong run in the late 1980s and early 1990s, led by superstar center Peter Stastny. However, financial difficulties led to the team being sold and eventually moving to Denver in 1995.

The newly-renamed Colorado Avalanche wasted no time making an impact in their new home, winning the Stanley Cup in their first year in Denver. Led by superstar players such as Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Roy, the Avalanche won their second championship in 2001.
