The Sabres were founded in 1970 along with the Vancouver Ducks and became a part of the NHL when the league expanded to fourteen teams. Their original home arena was the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, but the team shifted to the First Niagara Center in 1996.
The most famous aspect of the Sabres’ history and their most famous lineup has been the French Connection, which was the name given to the dynamic trio of attacking forwards, French Canadians, Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Rick Martin. With Pereault at center and Robert and Martin at right and left wing respectively, the French Connection powered the franchise to their first Stanley Cup appearance in 1975. They played together for seven seasons and hold most of the Sabres’ scoring records.
The Sabres’ current squad is coached by Ron Rolston and features some of the NHL’s best young talent, like Marcus Foligno, Johan Larsson and Mark Pysyk. Combined with the experience of senior players, Cody McCormick, Steve Ott and John Scott, the team has the balance and depth to push for a strong finish to the NHL season.
