Buffalo Sabres joined the NHL relatively late in 1970 during the expansion phase. The franchise is based out of Buffalo, New York. It is placed in the Eastern Conference where it plays in the Atlantic Division. At the beginning of their history, the home stadium of the Sabres used to be at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. However after two and a half decades, the Sabres relocated to the First Niagara Center.
A Club With a Lot of Potential
The Sabres did not take long to make their mark in the league. Within five years of joining the league, the club made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost in a closely fought game to the Philadelphia Flyers. In 1999, the Sabres again advanced to the finals where they were once again heartbroken after losing to the Dallas Stars. In spite of winning the Eastern Conference title 3 times, the President’s Trophy once and the Atlantic Division titles 6 times, the coveted Stanley Cup remains to be won.
Legendary ‘French Connection’
Over the years some of the most well-known players in the league have donned the famous Sabres jersey. But none are more loved than the iconic trio of French players who were known as the ‘French Connection.’ The three players consisted of Rick Martin, Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert. In honor of their service to the franchise, their jerseys were retired. In addition to this, a statue was constructed in 2012 at the First Niagara Centre to acknowledge the glorious years of the ‘French Connection.’ Now you too can watch this dynamic team in action; don’t forget to buy Buffalo Sabres Detroit tickets.
