The Utah Jazz was founded in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, but the team moved to Salt Lake City in 1979 and was renamed. In its early years, the team went through continuous venue changes, which were one of the reasons they didn't perform well. Since 1979, they have been headquartered in Salt Lake City, and since 1991 their home court has been the Energy Solutions Arena located at 310 W South Temple, Salt Lake City.
Utah Jazz's early years were not encouraging; they scored low and when the team moved to Salt Lake, things didn't change much despite the Jazz having some fine players. 1980 saw the club having financial issues as well as losses in the arena, mainly due to the small market, but this was a sort of rebuilding time for the Jazz. Several steps were taken for betterment, and this paid off in 1983 when the Jazz finally won their first ever Mid West Divisional title. Some fine players at that time were Rich Kelley, Rickey Green, Mark Eaton, and Thurl Bailey, and this group played a key role in the team's winnings.
In 1984-85, Mark Eaton was awarded the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award, and from 1984 onwards, the Utah Jazz never missed the playoffs until 2004. During 1984-85, they lost the Conference semi-finals to the high-scoring Denver Nuggets 4-1. In 1985-86, the Jazz got a star forward, Karl Malone, who established himself as one of the main forwards of the league, but from 1985-87, the Jazz failed to move to the second rounds. It was in the 1987-88 season that the Jazz went on to the Conference semi-finals to face the Los Angeles Lakers, but lost the game 4-3 in a nail-biting finish.
The Utah Jazz got stronger in the 1990-91 season when they signed Jeff Malone, which proved to be fruitful as they stood second in the division and defeated the Phoenix Suns in the first round, but lost to the Portland Trail Blazers 4-1 in the next round. One of the most successful seasons for the Jazz was 1991-92; they stood first in the division and, for the first time in history, went on to play the Conference Finals, but lost again to the Trail Blazers 4-2. In 1995-96, the Jazz again stormed to the Conference Finals, but lost to the Seattle SuperSonics. Utah Jazz proved to be a surprise team when they went on to the NBA Finals for two consecutive years in 1997-98, but lost both times to the Chicago Bulls. After 1998, the Jazz have yet to reach the NBA Finals.
From the year 2000 onwards, the Jazz acquired ace players like Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur, and Deron Williams, which earned them the status of a team that could upset any opponent. Unfortunately, the early years of this decade were not promising, and the players had injury problems, but the line-up was so strong that critics always had high hopes. The Jazz raced to the Conference Finals in the 2006-07 season, but lost to the San Antonio Spurs 4-1. In 2007-08, they stormed to the Conference Semifinals to face old rivals the Lakers, but lost 4-1, and again met the Lakers in the 2009-10 Conference Semifinals, and lost 4-0.
Utah Jazz holds the distinction of being one of the teams who never lost 60 games in a season. Jazz players Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer were selected for 2008 Olympics held in China, Utah Jazz was the only team from which two players were selected and the US team won a gold medal. With such fine players and seasoned coach Jerry Sloan one can expect the unexpected from the Jazz.
