The Big Ten Conference was founded in 1896 and is an association of world-class universities. James Delany, the Big Ten Conference Commissioner, announced on August 5, 2010 that Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis had been chosen for the inaugural championship game. That year, the Big Ten Conference announced that an agreement had been reached with Fox Sports be the official broadcast partner for the period from 2011-2016. The contract was worth around $20-$25 million for each season, making it one of college football’s most valuable conference championship games.  The commissioner also stated that the Big Ten would quite likely consider shifting the game’s site to other cities such as Minneapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Green Bay and Chicago.

The Big Ten Conference used to determine its champion through regular season play before 2011, as there were only 11 member schools.  According to the requirements set by NCAA in 2010, there are to be 12 teams with two divisions for there to be possibility for a conference championship game. Hence, the Big Ten conference added the University of Nebraska to meet the NCAA requirements.

In June, 2011, it was announced that Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will host the title game, starting in 2011 and going through 2015. As of 2012, the Wisconsin Badgers have won both Big Ten Championship games by defeating Michigan State in 2011, and Nebraska last season. The Big Ten Championship winner will earn a chance to play in one of two postseason games hosted at the historic Rose Bowl Stadium this season; the 100th Rose Bowl Game or the BCS National Championship Game in January 2014.
