If this does not stir enough excitement in you then you must look forward to 2010 ACC Football Championship. The ACC Football Championship stands for the American college football game held by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In this game, the champion of the Atlantic Division contests against the champion of the Coastal Division in a game which is normally conducted at the ending of the regular season. The divisions play round-robin schedules against other teams. Finally those teams are selected for the championship games that attain the highest divisional records at the end of the season. Dr Pepper is the corporate sponsor of the game while ABC/ESPN televise the championship in agreement with the conference.
The ACC Football Championship started around 2005. The Atlantic Coast Conference added two teams Miami and Virginia Tech in 2004, making room for 11 teams in the league. There were 11 regular-season games in NCAA then. A 12th team was added by the league after the 2004 season, namely Boston College. This entitled the league to hold a championship with the culmination of the 2005 season. Two divisions comprised the conference, each embracing six teams each. The best conference record entitles a team to be selected from a division for participation the championship game. The champion inaugurated at the end of the 2005 college football season with teams Virginia Tech and Florida State Seminoles competing against each other at the Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
Wake Forest competed against Georgia Tech in the 2006 game. The latter was defeated with a 9-6 score. Jacksonville remained the host for the 2007 game with Boston College pitched against Virginia Tech. With a score of 30-16, Tech won the game and again appeared in the 2008 championship to overcome Boston College. The winning score was 30-12. Georgia Tech achieved their first ACC Championship by defeating Clemson in 2009, with a modest score of 39-34. As of now, six ACC teams out of a total of twelve have contested the championship. The first five years of championship have shown four different champions.
The ACC Championship game in Jacksonville is organized by the Gator Bowl Committee which declared after the 2007 game that the game would not be staged in future due to low attendance. The ACC then short-listed Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina and Tampa as the potential venues of the game after Jacksonville's withdrawal. This way, Tampa hosted the 2008 and 2009 games while Charlotte is all set to stage the game in 2010 and 2011. The Coastal Division champion was declared the "home" team in 2008. The ACC Championship Games incorporate "home" teams as 1-2.
Initially, the representatives of ACC extended invitations to three schools, Virginia Tech, Miami and Boston College as part of expansion. Virginia Tech and Miami officially began playing ACC with the 2004 college football season. Arising out of a lawsuit from the departure of the three former Big East Conference teams, Boston College started playing in ACC in the 2005 season. A conference championship football game was organized when the league finally comprised of 12 teams.
