Initially they played as an independent team without any formal affiliation, between 1946 and 1951 they played first along with two other schools in the Middle Three Conference and later joined Middle Atlantic Conference. Now they are the member of the Big East Conference and Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association and their NCAA Division is 1-A. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are stationed in New Brunswick in the State of New Jersey. The official color is scarlet red and the popular fight song is The Bells Must Ring.
