Detroit Pistons: An Illustrious History
One of the oldest franchises in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons were founded in 1941 in Fort Wayne. Upon inception, the then Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons joined the National Basketball League (NBL). They won back-to-back NBL Championships in 1944 and 1945 before becoming a part of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948. One year later, when the NBL and BAA merged to form the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Pistons joined the new league. By that time, they had become a highly competitive outfit that regularly made the playoffs. In 1955, the Pistons reached their maiden NBA Finals and then repeated the feat a year later.
Just a couple of years after that, the franchise relocated to Detroit and has called the Motor City its home ever since. During this time, the Pistons have been based in a number of arenas, most notably the Cobo Arena (1961-1978), the Pontiac Silverdome (1978-1988), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (1988-2017). In 2017, the team moved to the state-of-the-art Little Caesars Arena which they share with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Championship Wins and Finest Moments
The Pistons have been playoff regulars for much of their history, and to date, their impressive trophy haul consists of eleven Division titles, five Conference crowns, two NBL titles, and three NBA Championships, including back-to-back triumphs in 1989 and 1990, and the other win coming in 2004. Two of these three NBA title wins came after upsetting the star-studded Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals, in 1989 and 2004. In particular, the 1989 victory came over a Lakers side that hadn’t dropped a game in the playoffs and contained stars such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Byron Scott. Similarly, the Lakers went into the 2004 NBA Finals as favorites, with Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, Shaquille O'Neal, and Gary Payton in their ranks; few bet against the team from the City of Angels. However, the Pistons swept aside the star-studded Lakers in five games, thanks to their rock-solid defense and better team cohesion.

- Allen Iverson.
- Chauncey Billups.
