About The Roots Picnic Tickets

The Roots Picnic was the brainchild of Philadelphia act The Roots, which rose to prominence in 1987. The band’s jazzy approach to hip hop & neo soul was something new for listeners, & the politically scathing lyrics of Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter combined beautifully with Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson’s mesmeric mastery over the drums for an eclectic sound. Rahzel & Scott Storch were added as members after the success of Do You Want More?!!!??!, The Roots’ second album. A tougher sound was introduced in 1996s hugely popular Illadelph Halflife, and major personnel shifts followed. By 2000, longtime protégé Dice Raw linked up with The Roots along with Scratch, while Malik B. led an overhaul of band members after 1999s EP The Legendary. With the band having cemented their lofty status in hip hop circles & toured excessively, members suggested an annual headlining event where they could use their considerable star-power to invite other acts for a musical extravaganza. The first annual Roots Picnic took place in 2000 & it was a thunderous success. People turned out in hordes for the band & its various supporting acts. The 2002 event became famous for a predicted DMC reunion that never truly materialized in respect for deceased member Jam Master Jay. With time, a diversification of genres was sought, & so The Roots Picnic began touching a larger target audience. Recent shows have seen much fanfare.

Philadelphia is well & truly the home stretch of The Roots, & fans have been turning up in great numbers to support Philadelphia’s hip hop bigwigs. Their more recent work includes a collaborative album, Wake Up!, with R&B artist John Legend that went in for five Grammy nominations, winning for Best R&B Album, Best Group R&B Vocal Performance (Shine) & Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance (Hang On In There). The Roots Picnic 2011 also features young Philly rapper Wiz Khalifa, whose profile is on the rise with the success of the #1 single “Black and Yellow”. Khalifa recently completed his nationwide tour & capped it with performances at Bonnaroo & Bamboozled. The Roots will also provide musical accompaniment to Nas (real name Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) who reached dizzying heights with Illmatic (1994) which is regarded as a hip hop classic. After years of verbally feuding with Jay-Z, Nas has turned a corner & has recently released collaborations with Bob Marley’s youngest son.

His legendary MC skills will be on full show at The Roots Picnic. The Roots will also back up talented jazz bassist & vocalist Eperanza Spalding. Spalding was the first ever jazz-grounded recipient of the Best New Artist Grammy at the recent function, & her collaborative efforts with artists like Mike Stern & Stanley Clarke have made sure her recent album Chamber Music Society remains in the limelight. Other stalwarts gracing the stage include Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Man Man, The Dismemberment Plan, Mac Miller, Yelawolf, Little Dragon, Donn T, Nicos Gun, & J. Period.

Since 2000, The Roots Picnic tickets have provided livewire concerts catering to the needs of every genre. In recent years, distinguished acts like Gnarls Barkley, Public Enemy, & Vampire Weekend have graced the stage. Last year’s roaring success was based on The Roots’ set & their accompaniment of John Legend & Wu Tang Clan, & trends are set to continue this year.

Quality music has no parallel if one is in need of a release from the hectic pressings of daily chores. With multiple genres coming together under the trusted umbrella of one of hip hop’s true superstars, there seems no reason why fans wouldn’t break a leg scrambling for The Roots Picnic tickets.
