Popularly known as "the party with a purpose,” the annual Essence Music Festival is back with a bang. The Essence Festival tickets are now up for sale. Just like in past years, the event is scheduled to take place in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Mary J. Blige, Charlie Wilson, Prince, Amel Larrieux, Jill Scott, King - Big Sam's Funky Nation, Sebastian Mikael, Leela James, Doug E Fresh and many more will be performing at the festival this year. 

About Essence Music Festival


The event dates back to 1995, when it was held to celebrate the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Essence, the magazine. The magazine primarily focuses on African American women. In the same vein, the Essence Music Festival is known to be the largest event, which celebrates African-American music and culture in the US. Locally the event is regarded as the Essence Fest. The festival takes place in New Orleans every year, except for 2006, when the event was shifted to Houston because of Hurricane Katrina. The event features a main stage along with four superlounge stages that have standing room only.


In the past decade, several renowned artists have performed at the festival including Prince, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Rihanna and Beyoncé amongst a host of other artists. Charles Kent "Charlie" Wilson is also famously known as Uncle Charlie. This American R&B artist is a songwriter, singer and producer. Charlie used to perform in “The Gap Band” as the lead vocalist. As a solo artist this talented musician has earned nomination for three NAACP Image Awards, seven Grammy Awards and more. Prince Rogers Nelson is popularly known by his mononym Prince. This American artist has successfully established himself as a songwriter, singer, actor and multi-instrumentalist. During his career, this he has released thirty Top 40 singles and ten platinum albums. Having written hundreds of songs, Prince is widely known for producing and recording his own music through his own music label.


The American artist Amel Larrieux is a keyboardist, singer and songwriter. Amel gained dominance in the mid nineties as a founding member of the band named “Groove Theory”. The duo included Bryce Wilson. She left the band in 1999 to pursue her career as a solo artist. You can watch all these spectacular artists, along with a host of others, live at the festival.
