About Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu is a born performer. She had her first performance of dancing and singing along with her mother at the age of 4 at Dallas Theatre Center. Named Erica Abi Wright, she was born in South Dallas, Texas on February 26, 1971. Badu and her brother were raised alone by their Nigerian mother as their father deserted them early in their lives. They had spent considerable time with their grandmother who looked after them when their mother used to go out for performances. Erykah got her first ever standing ovation at the tender age of 6, when she realized that she enjoys limelight and wants to bring people to their feet. In late 80s Badu enrolled herself at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts. She devoted most of her time in learning and polishing her dancing skills.  After that, she joined Grambling State University, where she majored in music. During that time, she also prepared her nineteen songs demo which helped her being introduced to Kedar Mesenberg, a talented record executive in SXSW Musical Festival. Badu signed with him for his recently launched label Kedar Entertainment. Later the company joined hands with the Universal Studios. Through that platform Badu started enticing the world to the charms of neo soul music.

Erykah Badu’s debut record, “Baduism” was a ground-breaking album. It was released in early 1997. She got noticed immediately and her songs were hailed as a new genre of music. She attracted attention as the leading singer in the burgeoning neo soul music. “Baduism” eventually reached triple platinum and its lead song “On & On” won Grammy Award at the 1998 ceremony. Her second album “Live” was released in 1999 and reached double platinum and its hit song “You got me”, in collaboration with Jill Scott earned her another Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or a Group. Her third album “Worldwide Underground” was released in 2003 and got her nominated for four more Grammy Awards. Her fourth album “New Amerykah- Part 1” got released in 2008 followed by her fifth album “New Amerykah- Part 2 (Return of the Ankh) in 2010.
