About Umphreys Mcgee

Though Umphreys McGee’s music is labeled as progressive rock, it is more of a progressive improvisation that experiments with music and tries new styles. As one of the best bands in jam band scene of the nineties, alongside greats such as Grateful Dead and Phish, they have risen from humble backgrounds and are today one of the most sought after live, looking at the number of cheap Umphreys McGee tickets sold. They were founded at the University of Notre Dame by members of two rock bands, Stomper Bob and Tashi Station from the university. They started with singing cover songs, covering bands such as Guns N’ Roses and the Grateful Dead.

In less than eight months, Umphreys McGee released their first album, unusually titled as Greatest Hits Vol. III. Soon after the release of this album, they had become one of the most popular bands in Notre Dame and South Bend. They started performing in other colleges and also released a live album. In 2000, they were joined by Jake Cinninger who contributed many original songs and led to a heavier sound. Their next album, One Fat Sucka, was released soon after. In 2001, they moved to an improv style of music, a style different from that used by many other jam bands.

In 2002, Umphreys McGee released a recording titled as Local Band Does OK and then performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival where they were seen live by more than a hundred thousand people, selling the largest number of CDs at the event, more so than famous artists such as Norah Jones and Trey Anastasio. In 2004, they released the album Anchor Drops and also landed a distribution deal that led to their music being sold in stores all over the US. This album received rave reviews from various music magazines and was followed by a performance at the Bonnaroo Festival. Following this, the Rolling Stone magazine praised them as the ‘odds-on favorites’.

In 2006, Umphreys McGee released their fourth studio album and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! They played more than a hundred live shows that year and released a studio album and a live album in 2007. The live album was reviewed by Rolling Stone and ranked as a four star album. In 2011, they released the album Death by Stereo which featured a number of new songs and olds songs that the band had played on their live sets.

With twelve albums released to date and five DVDs, they are definitely a band to catch live through Umphreys McGee tickets to enjoy a spectacular take of progressive improvisational rock.
