About Tom Petty

When Tom Petty and his band the Heartbreakers had their thirtieth anniversary in 2006, they celebrated by proceeding on a tour. The band members have collaborated with Petty by playing on his solo albums besides providing backing to him on his tours to promote albums. The artist also accompanied Mucrutch to provide support for the promotion of their debut album. Tony Dimitriades has been acting as Petty's manager since 1976. Petty and the Heartbreakers gave a performance at the Super Bowl XLII Halftime show in February 2008.

Tom Petty was brought up in Florida and went to high school there. At the age of 10 he met Elvis Presley due to which his interest turned towards rock and roll. He became an Elvis Presley's fan when he was on the sets of his film "Follow That Dream". Another one of his inspirations were The Beatles. In an interview on a radio show "Fresh Air", Petty declared that he wanted to start a band when he saw "The Ed Sullivan Show" where the Beatles had a slot. He learnt the guitar from Don Felder who was residing in the same area where he was living. He also served as one of the grounds crew for the University of Florida but did not study there.

Petty's musical aspirations finally made him form a band known as the Sundowners. Later on, the group evolved into Mudcrutch but it failed to capture the interest of the fans even though it featured Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell who formed Heartbreakers with Petty in future. "Depot Street" was their only single which stirred the emotions of the fans. Mudcrutch got dismembered eventually and Petty pursued a solo career then. The first line-up of Heartbreakers was formed with the collaboration of Petty, Campbell, Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair. Their first album was "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers" was more successful in Britain than in USA. One of its single was "Breakdown" which was released again in 1977 peaking at number forty in early 1978. You're Gonna Get It!" was the second album launched by the group. It was their first work which found its place in the Top 40 and included some mesmerizing singles like "Listen To Her Heart" and "I Need to Know". The band's first major success came with "Damn the Torpedoes", their third album which achieved platinum status. It sold close to two million copies and comprised such scintillating singles like "Refugee", "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Here Comes My Girl".

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had become a renowned band by then. The group's album "Hard Promises" churned out in 1981 went platinum becoming a top-ten hit. It contained the hit single "The Waiting" besides featuring Petty's first duet "Insider".
