The xx are a soft rock indie band from England. Since its formation, the band has taken audiences and critics by storm with its uniquely pop-centric songs and catchy lyrics. The xx is a relatively new band. It was formed in 2008 in London, England. As with many other musical groups, the members of The xx the band originally met at school. Lead singer and bass player Oliver Sim paired up with guitarist Romy Madley-Croft and began playing as a two-piece act. Both Sim and Madley-Croft were teenagers at the time. They initially spent a considerable amount of time experimenting to find the ideal sound. Over time, the band was joined by guitarist Baria Qureshia and co-lead vocalist Jamie Smith.

About The Xx

The band started performing in 2005. It played mostly small, intimate shows in local pubs and clubs. Over the next three years, the band refined its sound even further and articulated its direction. By then, the members of the band decided to name the it The xx. The name had a simple and minimalist vibe to it, just like the band’s music. The xx released its first album, titled xx, in 2009. The band recorded the music for the album in a small garage and produced it themselves. This intimate and low-key production is reflected in all the songs on the release. The album featured sweeping musical landscapes merged with the calm and haunting vocals of Smith and Sim. The songs had catchy hooks and elements of eletro-pop as well as classic 1980s soft-rock.

The release was met with overwhelmingly positive critical reviews. It was rated as having achieved “universal acclaim” on the review aggregator Metacritic. The album also went on to be a part of many year-end lists. It was ranked as the ninth best album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine and the second best by NME. The song “Crystalised” was became the Single of the Week on the UK iTunes store. Because of the accessibility of the band’s music, many of the songs from the album lent themselves for use in other media as well. The band’s songs were used in a number of TV shows, like Cold Case, Suits, 24/7, Person of Interest, Mercy, Hung and 90210. They were also used in films, like I Am number Four and Waterloo Road. An extended version of the intro from the album was also prominently used in the popular movie Project X. The same track was used by the BBC in a series of broadcasts and was used on an episode of Newsnight. Rihanna sampled it for her song “Drunk on Love.” More accolades followed the band in 2010. In that year, xx won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize and was named the best Irish and British album of the year. This greatly helped to boost sales of the band’s music.

Amid this newfound success, the xx experienced issues within its ranks. As a result, Baria Qureshi was asked to leave the band. Despite this, the band continued as a trio and since been making rounds at large festivals and other events. For its first ever tour, the xx headlined for itself. The band also shared the stage with bands like Friendly Fires, Micachu and the Big Pink. In 2010, the band was asked to appear at All Tomorrow’s Parties, one of England’s biggest and most important alternative music festivals. The band continued this trend and played at five of the biggest festivals in America. Namely, Austin City Limits, Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Coachella. As a result, the xx has now amassed a huge following worldwide.

The band entered the studio again in 2011 to begin work on their follow-up album. The album was called Coexist and was released the next year. Inspired by club music, the album carried on in the vein on the band’s debut release. However, the music now had an expanded sound. Like its predecessor, Coexist was released to widespread critical acclaim. A few days before the album’s release, the band performed at Bestival to the largest audience that festival has ever seen. The xx has steadily but surely become one of the biggest and most loved bands in recent times. Their influence has spread far and wide, with fans all over the world. These fans can now get cheap The xx tickets and enjoy a night of good music.
