About The Chieftains

Irish music of that time had a lot of pop influence. Most of the performers were mixing pop with Irish folk in their attempt to make their sound more commercially accessible. That all changed when Ceoltoiri Cualann was formed. That was a group being led by Sean O’Riada and Paul Moloney was also one of the members. The band proceeded to strip away all the rock and pop influences from their music and made a concerted effort to come out with music that was as original as Irish music got. After spending some years with Ceoltoiri Cualann, Paul Moloney came out of their ranks to start his own group. Moloney along with Michael Tubridy and Sean Potts got together in late 1962 to perform together. Moloney’s house became the band’s rehearsal place during their years of infancy. The band was officially formed in 1963 in Dublin. It began as a semi professional band with some of the best traditional Irish music exponents joining hands.
At the center of The Chieftains music have always been the pipes used by Paddy Moloney. Once the band got underway more people like Martin Fay, O’Riada and David Fallon came onboard.  Their attempt to showcase everything that made Irish folk so special began to pay off instantly. Their concerts and recordings became big hits with the music loving fraternity in their native Ireland and across the border in England. It was an impressive start but they couldn’t take the next step. What held them back was the decision of continuing as a semi professional group.
All four of the band’s first albums came out in the time span between 1965 and 1973 to immense acclaim. Claddagh, music label released them in Ireland. That led to the recordings getting noticed by Island Records which released them in England as well as the US in 1976. The 1970’s decade was the time when The Chieftains made their presence felt in the US to become global stars. The band had by then turned professional which enabled them to take their music further than ever before.
The Chieftains got their big commercial breakthrough in 1975. Barry Lyndon was a movie that hit the cinemas that year and the music of the film was done by The Chieftains. The movie didn’t do too well but the music score caught the attention of the masses. They cashed on their newfound success by going on a special tour and making appearances on major networks. That pushed their profile even higher in the US.
Chieftains 5, the group’s fifth album and their first four albums were released by Island Records. All five albums generated very positive response from across the board to solidify The Chieftains status among the fastest rising groups of that era. All that success paved the way for the band to come out with a new album every year. The band have been a constant presence on charts since then and have continued to perform to this day.
The Chieftains success has prompted super stars like Rolling Stones, Roger Daltrey, Luciano Pavarotti and Madonna among many others to collaborate with them. They have won an impressive six Grammy awards. They are also the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award which was given to them at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in the year 2002. Even after being on the circuit for over five decades they still aren’t showing anytime of stopping anytime soon. Their latest road trip is a perfect example of that and you can watch them perform there by simply buying cheap The Chieftains tickets.
