About Prince

Prince was born on the 7th of June, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Mattie Shaw and John L. Nelson. He was named after his father, Prince Rogers, who was a part of a jazz band called the Prince Rogers Trio. Prince produced a demo tape in 1976 with the producer, Chris Moon in the latter's studio in Minneapolis. Moon was unable to get a recording contract, and so brought their tape to Owen Husney, who was a Minneapolis Businessman. He signed Prince to a management contract at the age of seventeen, and helped him create a demo recording at the Sound 80 Studios using David Z, who was an engineer/producer. This resulted in interest from numerous record companies such as Warner Bros. Records, Columbia Records and A&M Records. Prince finally signed a contract with Warner Bros. Prince and Husney then moved to Sausalito, California and released Prince's debut album For You at Record Plant Studios. The album was later mixed in 1978 in Los Angeles. Prince recorded his album Dirty Mind in his own studio and released it in 1980. The album was certified gold. Its single Uptown reached number five on the Billboard Dance Chart and the Hot Soul Singles charts. He also became the opening act for the Fire It Up tour of Rick James in 1980.

Prince released his album Controversy in October, 1981. He made his first performance on Saturday Night Live in February, 1981 and performed the song Party Up. In 1982, he released a double album called 1999 which sold more than three million copies. The title track of this album was a sign of protest against nuclear proliferation and became an instant hit. His video Little Red Corvette was one of the first two videos by a black singer to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, with Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. His song Delirious also reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Prince can play several instruments such as electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, clavinet, synthsizer, drums, saxophone, percussion and harmonica. Prince has acted as a talent promoter for the music careers of Carmen Electra, Vanity 6, Shiela E., and Carmen Electra and has also written songs for them as well as others such as Chaka Khan, Sinead O'Conner and The Bangles. He has also composed numerous songs which have not been released. His music is influenced by R&B, rock, soul, rap, funk, blues, electronica, New Wave, disco, folk, psychedelia, hip hop and jazz. His artistic inspirations include Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly & the Family, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, and the Beatles. Prince was the pioneer of the Minneapolis Sound, which is a hybrid mixture of pop, rock, funk, New Wave and R&B. This has influenced several other musicians as well.

He has been nominated for twenty-four Grammy Awards and has managed to win seven of them. He also possesses one Golden Globe award and one Academy Award. He was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the first year of his eligibility. In the same year, he was ranked number twenty-eight in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
