A phenomenal songwriter and musician, Natalie Merchant hails from Jamestown, New York. She was initially a part of the pop music band called 10,000 Maniacs where she played as a lead singer and lyricist. From 1981 to 1993, she had successfully released four Gold and two Platinum records. These hit releases are In My Tribe, The Wishing Chair, Blind Man's Zoo, Our Time in Eden, Hope Chest, and MTV Unplugged. In 1993, she left the band and began to write her own material. The first song that she wrote was I May Know the Word that appeared on her debut album, Tigerlily which was released in 1995. Other songs of the album are Beloved Wife, Carnival, River, Wonder and Jealousy that have been acclaimed by fans and critics alike. Merchant has toured extensively for this particular album and has sold around four to five million copies.

In 1998, she released her second solo album, Ophelia which was composed by Gavin Bryars. Some of the feel good singles of the album include Kind and Generous, Break Your Heart and Life Is Sweet. The Canadian singer and songwriter, Sarah McLachlan invited Natalie Merchant to lead with her the biggest music festival of the year, Lilith Fair. This helped the American singer gain excellent exposure and the album, Ophelia reached a Platinum status in less than a year. In 2001, Merchant appeared at a whole new level with her third album, Motherland that was released on the Elektra Label. In 2003, she left Elektra Label and released the next album, The House Carpenter's Daughter on her own label known as Myth America Records. The album opened at number thirteen on the Top Internet Albums of 2001 and number thirty on Billboard 200.

Other albums of this incredible singer include Retrospective and Leave Your Sleep that were released in 2005 and 2010 respectively. The brilliant musician has researched and recorded many songs in the album Leave Your Sleep which have been adapted primarily from the work of various classic and contemporary poets.  The album has been a chart success as it has hit number one on Billboard Folk Albums and number seventeen on Billboard Top 200. She has worked with various artists onstage and in studio which include Wynton Marsalis, Mavis Staples, Daniel Lanois, David Byrne, REM, The Chieftains, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the list goes on. Natalie Merchant is as wonderful on stage as she is in her real life; she speaks to the audience in a very personal manner and plays to the audiences’ request, so you cannot feel alone in her concert.
