About Natalie Merchant the Hudson Valley Philharmonic

She gained popularity in the eighties when she became a member of the band, “10,000 Maniacs”. Born in the year 1963, in the area of Jamestown, located in New York, Merchant entered the music scene in the year 1981 and has been active ever since. Merchant belonged to a family of musicians, as her grandfather played instruments such as the guitar, mandolin and accordion. Joining the band in its infancy, Merchant started working on their debut album with band members, Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson, Rob Buck and John Lambardo. Their debut album was named “Human Conflict Number Five”. She stayed with the band till the year 1993, during which time she provided her vocals and piano expertise for a total of seven studio albums, after which Merchant decided to pursue a solo career.
As a solo artist, the debut song that she came forward with was called “I May Know the World”. This song gained massive popularity and was also featured on the artist’s debut album “Tiger lily” that came out in the year 1995. A song from the album “Beloved Wife” was featured on the soundtrack of the feature film “Message in a Bottle”. Releasing the album through Elektra Records, another track from the album called “Carnival” gained massive commercial success after an American serial killer Aileen Wuornos, requested that the track be played at her wake after she was executed. The song was also heard on the soundtrack of a documentary based on the serial killer. This single was able to make it to the US Singles Chart after which several other singles such as “Jealousy” and “Wonder” also got featured. The artist has released a total of six studio albums and has been active for almost twenty years now.
