John Cale is a Welsh musician whose birth name is John Davies Cale. He was born in Carmarthenshire, Wales in 1942. He had a passion for music and loved playing the viola from a very young age. Cale decided to pursue a career in music. He learned music at the Goldsmiths College in London. During the early 60’s Cale was actively performing at various concerts and gatherings. One of his major achievements during this time was that he teamed up with acclaimed British composer Michael Garrett and conducted the Cage’s Concert for Piano and Orchestra. He then went to the US to study rock and classical music. Here he had the privilege of working under the famous music teacher Aaron Copland who later on became a major influence on the music of Cale. John Cale is a multi-instrumentalist and apart from the viola he can fluently play organ, harpsichord, double bass, guitar, piano and harmonica. During his career he has been associated with major labels like rhino, Double Six, SPY, Island and Beserkley Records. In 1963 he participated in an 18 hour long piano playing marathon that was held in New York, during this performance music theorist and composer Johan Cage was also present.
In 1965 Cale teamed up with his musician friend guitarist Lou Reed to form a rock and experimental rock band named The Velvet Underground. Cale played in this band as an instrumentalist as well as a singer whereas Lou Reed was the lead singer and Sterling Morrison was playing lead guitar. After four years Cale left the band and went on to pursue a solo career. During the 70’s he collaborated with artists on their albums, he played Viola on Bryter Layter which was an album recorded by Nick Drake. He then joined hands with composer Terry Riley to release an instrumental album titled Church of Anthrax.
Cale during his career has collaborated with artists like Brian Eno, Nico, Kevin Ayers Phil Manzanera and La Monte Young. During 70’s Cale released albums like Paris 1919, Slow dazzle, The Academy in Peril and Helen of Troy.
