About Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros

The name of the band has its origins in the break up story of Ebert. Going through the post break up healing phase, Ebert began to write a book based around the character of Edward Sharpe. He sketches Sharpe as a God sent for the purpose of saving the human race. However, Sharpe gets distracted from his task and eventually ends up falling in love. The character is a manifestation of Ebert’s boyhood alter ego.
Ebert happened to meet the singer Jade Castrinos outside a cafe in the city of Los Angeles. By the mid of 2009, the two toured the country in a school bus with a bunch of other musicians. Hence the band came into being as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. This eleven to twelve member group held their first live show the same year at the Marfa Film Festival of Texas. Soon they released their first record by the name of ‘Up from below’ on the 14th of July 2009. The album was produced by Aaron Older and Nico Aglietti. The varied song collection that comprises of the record is inspired from over four decades of musical excellence.
‘Up from Below’ starts off with a melodious number called ’40 Day Dream’. It is song about a boy in a state of coma who falls in love with a girl of his dreams. It is a moment of fulfillment experienced in the temporary world of imagination. The dream is so beautiful that he wishes to never wake up and die therein. ‘Home’ is another one of the most popular tracks of ‘Up from Below’. It was voted number 15 on the 2009 countdown of Australian Triple J Hottest 100, the world’s largest music poll. The song is a cheerful light hearted duet between Ebert (Sharpe) and his old female band mate Jade Castrinos. It plays in a conversational style with the singers quoting different instances and giving sweet and silly remarks.  ‘Home’ is an affectionate number that celebrates little sweet moments of togetherness.
The music band released their second album in 2012 with the title ‘Here’. It was produced by Vagrant Records and Rough Trade Records. The record constitutes the next chapter of the mysterious tale of Edward Sharpe by Ebert. However, whereas the first album comprised of a bunch of joyous and cheerful numbers, ‘Here’ is a soft mellow record with a collection of reflective and soul-searching tracks. The low key tunes and relaxed vocals of the lead singer Alexander Ebert create an atmosphere of cathartic spirituality. It may be a continuation of the musical tale of Edward Sharpe, but it certainly provides a strong reflection of Ebert’s own original self. This is because a large part of the record is occupied by the solo singing of Ebert. The ensemble plays its role by backing these vocals with their soft distant choral harmonies.
With only a couple of records on the block, the band has proven its versatility of music styles. Whereas ‘Up and below’ will cheer you up with its amusing flow of dialogues and conversations, the simple sweet harmonies of ‘Here’ will transport you into a peaceful spiritual world for as long as the music lasts.
