About Dr John Leon Russell

Known as Mac Rebennack among family and friends, Dr. John is a universally acclaimed musician who is usually referred to as the epitome of the New Orleans traditional musical heritage. Beginning his musical career somewhere during 1950s, he has written innumerable songs and has played guitar for Art Neville, Frankie Ford, Professor Longhair and Joe Tex. He was also associated with some of the greatest records of that time which came out of Crescent City. Unfortunately, some years later, a gun accident forced him to give up on guitar. So, he just concentrated on other instruments like organ and piano. In 1960s, he left home for the west and there, too, he was in great demand which led him to work as a session musician there. He also played for various recordings by Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Sonny and Cher as well as for the “Exile on Main St.” by The Rolling Stones.

It was during that time that he started his career as a solo singer and emerged as Dr. John, the Nite Tripper which was indeed a charismatic persona. His first breakthrough came with the release of “Gris-Gris,” his debut album released in 1968 and thus a legend was born. The album was a brilliant and unique blend of voodoo mysticism, rhythm & blue, funk, Creole roots and psychedelic rock. Highlighting his career, one of the several masterful albums released by Dr. John include “The Sun, Moon and Herbs” which came out in 1971 and featured sessions from artists such as Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. In 1972, his next album “Dr. John’s Gumbo” was released and proved to be a ground-breaking recording. To this day, it is considered to be one of the most popular albums by Dr. John. In 1973, “In The Right Place” was released which included top charting singles including “Right Place Wrong time” and “Such A Night.” Since late 1960s, Dr. John has been touring extensively along with various musicians from time to time to amaze his fans all over the world.

Dr. John successfully garnered five Grammy Awards in year 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2008. In 2007, his “Sippiana Hericane” got nominated for a Grammy Award which he couldn’t win.  His latest album “Locked Down” has also been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of ‘Best Blues Album.’ In 2004, he got the Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès award for his N’awlinz Dis Dat or D’udda, becoming the first artist from North America to receive this award since 1970s. He also won the “Society of Young Musicians 2007 Trailblazer Award” and was inducted in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
