About Bastille

What began as a solo project by the talented Dan Smith eventually turned into an ensemble of highly proficient musicians. Bastilles is currently a quartet, consisting of the founder Dan Smith along with William Farquarson, Kyle Simmons and Chris Wood. The band takes its title from the Bastille Day, because coincidently the day falls on Smith’s birthday. The debut single by the band, titled ‘Overjoyed’ came out in 2012 and allowed the group to make it mark as a rock band in the contemporary music circles. The initial singles released by the band were moderate successes, but by the time it released its first album ‘Bad Blood’, it has already become an established act. The initial mode of public exposure for the band was through online media. A few of the tracks that the group posted on internet attracted a lot of public attention and earned the ensemble slots at several key Festivals in the U.K., like Isle of Wight and Glastonbury. The band’s debut album, ‘Bad Blood’, came out in 2013 and earned the band four Brit nominations as well as a Brit Award for the British Album of the Year.

The reference to the Bastille Day - the first day of the French Revolution- in the band’s name is more than a mere whim. The British group frequently includes references from the historical and mythical accounts into their lyrics. This thoughtful blend of historical allusions into the apparently meaningless and fantastical stories is a huge factor in the popularity of its songs.

In July 2012, British newspaper The Guardian mentioned the band as the ‘New Band of the Day’. The same year, the band also took a small headlining tour before the release of their third successful single ‘Flaws’. This track earned the band its first position in the U.K. Top 40 charts by debuting on #21. Subsequent releases by the talented artists also received much critical acclaim and commercial success. Fans were anticipating Bastille’s album so much that when in 2013, the band finally released its debut album, it charted at number one on the U.K. album charts. Recently, the Cheap Bastilles tickets appeared on the Saturday Night Live.

Currently, the band is touring and working on its second album. The release date for the upcoming album has not been announced yet but the fans are impatiently waiting for new material from this ensemble.
