About Gaither Vocal Band

Gaither Vocal Band is the successor band of Bill Gaither Trio. Bill Gaither and his wife have both been recognized as quite successful songwriters since the eighties with songs like He Touched Me, which Elvis Presley sang a cover of, and later chose to name his album after it as well. Presely garnered a Grammy Award for that album. Around the mid eighties, Gaither began to feel that his little group has already peaked, but he still wanted to make more gospel hits so that the trio was made to continue under a different name. The original band was named the New Gaither Vocal Band and was formed backstage of the Gaither Trio’s show.
Initially, the group comprised of Gary McSpadden and Bill Gaither and two backup singers from the trio, Lee Young and Steve Green. The quartet performed the song Your First Day in Heaven before a large crowd at the show. As a result, the band issued its self-titled debut album in 1981. The next year, Young left the band, getting replaced by bass singer Jon Mohr. The band soon began working on new material and released the album titled Passin’ The Faith Along.
It was not long before the Gaither Vocal Band released the need to drop New from its name. Around the same time, Gary McSpadden was planning on leaving the group so they quickly recorded their new album Wings. In order to replace McSpadden for baritone, Lowry was brought in for tapping with whom the album gained only more popularity since the latter provided great voice alongside comedy, giving their sound a more flowing quality. In 1991, the group released their Gospel roots project titled Homecoming which brought many Southern Gospel fans back to welcome the band as they once did. Two years later, with a still changing lineup, the band issued studio offering Southern Classics which produced the hit single Bowed On My Knees.
Through its long career, Gaither Vocal Band has made two chart-topping songs that took claimed high positions on Singing News charts, where Yes, I know stayed at Number One for four months in 1997, while I Will Go On stayed on the Number One spot throughout November 2006. Some of the most popular songs by the group include Count On Me, When Jesus Says It Is Enough, Temporary Home, Sinner Saved by Grace, He Touched Me and Let Freedom Ring.
Gaither Vocal Band has received all sixteen of its Dove Awards in the category of either Southern Gospel Song of Year or Southern Gospel Album of Year for songs such as Better Days, Give It Away, He’s Watching Me, and Satisfied. Their critically appreciated albums include Greatly Blessed, Reunited, Lovin’ Life, Give It Away, I Do Believe, God Is Good, and Southern Classics among several others.
