Besides being a top class music artist, the five string banjo player has penned several books, produced cassettes and video tapes that provide a thorough insight of the instrument and the skills to operate it. He has also opened a school called Tony Trischka School of Banjo for the purpose of teaching the art professionally. The banjoist has three International Bluegrass Music awards to his name. About Tony Trischka

Born in 1949, Tony Trischka is a native of Syracuse. He earned a degree from Syracuse University in Fine Arts. His interest in music grew as an inspiration of Kingston Trio’s ‘Charlie and the MTA’. During his college days, Trischka formed a band by the name of The Incredible String Band along with two fellow students. Apart from the trio, Trischka was also one of the founding members of the Syracuse Band Down City Ramblers for which he continued to play even after his graduation from the university.
Tony Trischka emerged on the music scene in 1971 making his debut with ‘15 Bluegrass Instrumentals’ in New York. A couple of years later he performed with the band called Breakfast Special, based in NY. Soon he recorded a couple of his own solo albums namely ‘Bluegrass Light’ and ‘Heartlands’. With his 1970 solo album, ‘Banjoland’, he took to his role to head the popular Broadway show, ‘The Robber Bridegroom’. The musician has also played alongside artists like Peter Rowan, Stacy Philips and Richard Greene.
During the 1980s, he allied with a new band called Skyline and started recording with them. Together they released an album called ‘Stranded in the Moonlight’ in the year 1984. Other records by the banjo player include ‘Robot Plane Flies over Arkansas’ and ‘Hill Country’ which were released in 1983 and 1985 respectively. He further played and provided for the soundtrack of the film ‘Driving Me Crazy’. Trischka also composed the theme songs for a famous national radio show, ‘Books On Air’. He has been a part of many other popular radio shows such as Garrison Keillor’sA Prairie Home Companion’, ‘From Our Front Porch’, ‘Mountain Stage’ and many others. Trischka went on to record a number of solo albums in the 90s such as ‘World Turning’ and ‘Glory Shone Around: A Christmas Collection’. In 2003, the musician released an album called ‘New Deal’ that also featured a cameo by vocalist Loudon Wainwright III.
During the 1990s, the artist formed his own band, Tony Trischka Band with Michael Amendola on saxophone, Marco Accattatis on bass, Glenn Sherman on guitar  and Grisha Alexiev on drums. The first record by the band was ‘Bend’. Together the group went to discover many unchartered territories by banjo. In early 2007, the banjo player released the album ‘Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular’. The album also included an appearance by the well known comedian Steve Martin. Apart from that, it featured performances by a number of famous musicians such as Earl Scruggs and Bela Fleck. Trischka has also been a banjo instructor to Fleck who is also regarded as one of the world’s top banjo players. Trischka has also performed alongside both Steve Martin and Bela Fleck on the widely popular ‘Late Show with David Letterman’.
