About Tony Bennett Diana Krall

Born, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, Tony Bennett is a New Yorker, who sings in Jazz, traditional pop and many other musical genres. Singing came to him naturally as he started singing in his early age. His early influences were, Joe Venuti, Jack Teagarden, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Eddie Cantor, and Al Jolson. Born into a poor family, Bennett worked as a singing waiter at Italian restaurants. His uncle, who was a tap dancer, introduced him to the world of show business. However, his early romance with music was cut short by World War II, as he was drafted in the Army. After fighting pitch battles with the Germans in Europe, he was assigned to Army’s Special Services Band. He entertained the American soldiers under the stage name, Joe Bari. In 1946, he returned to the United States.
1949 was the year when Bennett, who was still known as Benedetto then, got his first major break into the music business. Pearl Bailey, a famous star, after being impressed by Bennett’s talents, asked him to open for her in the Greenwich Village. The legendary, Bob Hope was also in attendance. Hope decided to take Bennett under his wings and shortened his name to, Tony Bennett. It took Bennett only one more year to sign a major record deal with Columbia Records.
1950’s were simply marvelous both for Bennett and his fans and in fact for American music in general. Chartbusters from him like “Because of You”, “Rags to Riches”, along with albums like Basie Swings, Bennett Sings and The Beat of My Heart, were all released in that decade. Even with the advent of rock and roll in mid 1950’s, when existing pop singers started to fade away both commercially and professionally, Bennett managed to thrive. Eight of his singles continued to dominate the Billboard Top 40, during the later half of that decade. In 1957, one of his singles, “In the Middle of an Island”, reached position no. 9.
The man who sung “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and who boasts of 70 albums to his credit is also an accomplished painter. He paints under the name, Benedetto. The founder of Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, in his native Astoria, Queens, New York, remains critically acclaimed and popular concert performer and recording artist, of all times.
Diana Jean Krall, who is known for her contralto vocals, is a Canadian, and is an accomplished singer and a Jazz pianist. A music prodigy, she got into Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts, on a scholarship. In 1993, she returned to her native, Canada, in order to release her debut album.
Stepping Out was her debut album on which she worked with Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton. In 1995, her second album, Only Trust Your Heart, was released. Her third album, All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, was released in 1996. It was a huge success for her, both professionally and commercially.
