About Playboy Jazz Festival

The idea of the Playboy Jazz Festival was conceived by the well-known entrepreneur and owner of the Playboy Enterprises, Hugh Hefner. Hefner’s prime aim behind taking this initiative was to celebrate jazz, praise seasoned artists and provide a platform to the upcoming musicians. The event has been taking place almost every year since 1959. From 1979 till 2012 the event was regularly being hosted by the world renowned actor, musician, record producer and comedian, Bill Cosby. He was the emcee for most of the Playboy Jazz Festival events in the last few decades. In 2013, Cosby was replaced by another talented standup artist, George Lopez.

This year’s lineup includes a number of popular musicians such as the American jazz singer Dianne Reeves, jazz pianist Kenny Baron, jazz-pop singer Jamie Cullum, soul musician Allen Stone, Grammy Award winning bassist Esperanza Spalding, modern jazz and hip-hop artist Jose James, saxophonist Tia Fuller, ten-time Grammy Award winning singer and musician George Benson, jazz fusion and rock guitarist Kevin Eubanks and jazz double bassist Dave Holland. The festival will also feature a special show in which artists will pay tribute to the renowned jazz keyboard player, George Duke. Duke was a composer, music director and producer in genres including jazz fusion, smooth jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, post disco and R&B. This tribute show will be called Celebrating George Duke! Starring Al Jarreau and Stanley Clarke. It will be directed by John Beasley and feature other musicians such as Bryon Miller, Ndugu Chancler and Paul Jackson Jr. Esperanza High School Jazz Band. This band will be performing under the direction of the well-known country and folk singer/guitarist, Brad Davis.

Since the last few years Playboy Jazz Festival has been taking place at the Hollywood Bowl Amphitheater. It is a spacious outdoor venue in Los Angeles and can seat around 17,000 attendees. World famous musicians such as Jerry Hadley, Jane Eaglen, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Marilyn Horne have performed at the venue in the past.
