About Melody Gardot

Melody Gardot was born in 1985 in New Jersey and grew up in Philadelphia. She began taking music lessons at the age of nine and started playing piano during mid teens. At that time, she took music primarily as her hobby and was sometimes seen playing it for local audiences. Gardot had a very bad accident at the age of 19 when a jeep hit her. She broke her pelvis and got severe spinal and head injury. She spent almost a year on the hospital bed until she was ready to learn to walk and think once again. As a result of this accident, she witnessed memory loss problems and became hyper sensitive to sound and light. She couldn’t listen to music the way she used to do as her ears no longer supported loud volume and she also had to wear dark glasses permanently. Every morning she would wake up with a blank head with no memory and no sense of time. It was just like ‘Climbing Mount Everest every day’, as explained by Gardot herself.
Melody Gardot started music therapy and gradually it started to make difference. She learned to walk again with the beats of music and soon started writing songs in which she would express her feelings openly. Her songs reflected her emotions and touched the hearts of millions of people. In 2008, Melody Gardot produced her debut album ‘Worrisome Heart’ in collaboration with Glenn Barratt, the Grammy winning producer. The album got number 2 ranking on the US Charts and received a Gold status. Heart-wrenching songs from this album made her widely popular across the country as well as worldwide. Describing herself as ‘citizen of the world’, Gardot claims that her major influences include multiple artists like Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Judy Garland, Stan Getz, Duke Ellington and the Latin musician Caetano Veloso.
The following year, Gardot released her second studio album ‘My One and Only thrill’ with the assistance of the music producer Larry Klein. The album contained songs with unconventional and expressive lyrics and immediately hit the US Charts at the top once again. It received multi-platinum status and top ten rankings in several countries. The most popular singles that this album contains include ‘Baby I am a Fool’ and ‘Who Will Comfort Me’. She received excellent feedback for her live performances and was frequently seen performing at jam-packed venues.

Melody Gardot released her third and the latest album ‘The Absence’ in 2012. As expected this album turned out to be even more successful than the previous ones, spawning many hit singles such as ‘Your Heart Is As Black As Night’, ‘Mira’, ‘La Vie En Rose’ and ‘Amalia’. It reached the number 1 spot on the US Jazz charts and has sold more than 150,000 copies by now.
