About Branford Marsalis

The three-time Grammy Award winner and the NEA Jazz Master, Marsalis had his musical beginnings in 1980. He worked extensively with saxophone and soprano in the beginning and played with his brother Wynton. Later in 1985. He also produced works in collaboration with Sting of “The Police.” For this entire decade, Marsalis played with several artists and bands in different capacities like band leader, co-star in a movie and jazz composer. During the same time period, he also came up with his debut solo project, The Dream of The Blue Turtles. It was in 1995, that he took a turn and started focusing on his own quartet. During this period he paid more attention towards contemporary jazz and classic music. In 2001, he released his album Creation whose highlight was performances with symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles.
In 2002, he founded his own music label by the name of Marsalis Music which not only worked on good music but also became involved in education at university levels. With an aim to change the future of jazz in a classroom, he shared his knowledge at universities such as San Francisco State, Michigan State, Stanford and North Carolina Central. His inclination towards innovation and a strive for inculcating new developments into music under challenging conditions made him seek new works by modern classical composers like Sally Beamish. She re-conceived a piece in progress Under the Wing of The Rock, inspired by Branford’s performance which was then duly presented at the Celtic Connections festival by Branford himself.
The 2010 winner of Drama Desk Award and Tony award nominee composer, this artist is bent upon giving the music industry some perfect melodies of this time. His performance of Glazunov's "Concerto for Alto Saxophone" and Schuloff's "Hot-Sonate for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra" with the New York Philharmonic has been a masterpiece as well. Owing to his excellence as a soloist, he was again invited by them in their 2010-11 series where he demonstrated his competency to the repertoire. In 2011, the National Endowment for Arts bestowed the prestigious Jazz Masters Fellowship on the Marsalis family for the incredible efforts they had made both individually and collectively on American jazz music in particular. The family was acknowledged in The New York Times as “jazz’s most storied living dynasty.”
In 2011, the album Songs of Mirth and Melancholy under the label Marsalis Music was premiered in the Toronto Jazz festival. The year 2012 saw the Branford Marsalis Quartet delivering Four MF’s Playin’ Tunes which is one of the first recordings of the tight-knit working band with the drummer Justin Falkner. This was also the first vinyl release for the band. This release is probably the most inspirational one up till now as it features some original compositions by the quartet, a standard of the 1930s and a Thelonious Monk classic.
Leading one of best jazz Quartets today and giving excellent solo performances with finest ensembles, Branford has become a highly sought for artist with acclaimed orchestras such as the Chicago, Detroit, Düsseldorf, and North Carolina Symphonies and the Boston Pops, with a brilliant range of composers such as Debussy, Copland, Ibert, Glazunov, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem and Vaughn Williams. He not only continued his mission of teaching jazz music at university levels but even took it to college and high school levels. Thus at all levels, he works dedicatedly towards spreading the knowledge that he possesses.
So be ready for an inspirational event by a truly brilliant performer exhibiting his outstanding work and presenting a memorable evening dedicated to jazz music.
