A member of the folk music trio ‘Peter, Paul and Mary’, Peter Yarrow is a singer from NY, who was highly successful during the 1960s. Yarrow wrote ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’ along with Leonard Lipton which was one of the group’s most famous tracks. He has also worked as a solo artist and has come up with 61 albums. ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’ was the song that helped Peter, Paul and Mary find fame early in their career. Yarrow also wrote ‘Day is Done’, ‘The Great Mandala’ and ‘Light One Candle’ which are among the hits by the band. He was nominated for an Emmy in 1996 for ‘LifeLines Live’. The New Folks Concert series is a result of Yarrow’s hard work, which includes the Kerrville Folk Festival as well as the Newport Folk Festival. Peter Yarrow co-wrote ‘Torn Between Two Loves’ for Mary which ended up being a huge hit. Based on ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’, he came up with three CBS specials which later got nominated at the Emmys. He also organized the 1978 anti nuclear benefit ‘Survival Sunday’. Peter Yarrow and Bethany Yarrow, his daughter, often perform together and have produced the album ‘Puff & Other Family Classics’.
Besides folk music, Yarrow has also been involved in different political as well as social causes. He organized many events that played an important role in the anti-Vietnam War movement. This includes the Festival for Peace event that was held at Madison Square Garden. The funds generated from these events were used by anti-war candidates. The events featured many famous rock, folk, blues and jazz stars. Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Tom Paxton, Steppenwolf and Creedence Clearwater Revival are some of the starts that performed at these events.
Peter Yarrow was involved in politics throughout his career and he even performed at the wedding of John Kerry. In 1982, he was honored with the ‘Allard K. Lowenstein Award’ for his work, mainly for human rights, freedom and peace. He received the Tikkun Olam Award in 1995 by the Miami Jewish Federation. The concert at Ho Chi Minh City was one of his many benefit concerts that raised funds for the Victims of Agent Orange. He was also a part of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
Peter Yarrow also helped in starting a non-profit organization, Operation Respect that focused on school violence. Through the program children were taught in schools and camps to respect each other and try to sort out their differences.
