About Larry Gaitlin

Larry Gatlin came to the world of mainstream music in 1973. Since then, he has been very active in the country music scene. He has recorded under labels like Monument, Universal, Columbia, Capitol and Curb. His claim to fame was his stint with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers who gave some of the most wonderful country music hits of the 80’s. Gatlin’s solo career established him as a mature artist. Later on he associated with acts such as The Imperials. He also collaborated with names like Dottie West, Janie Fricke, Kris Kristofferson and the world class instrumentalist Kenny Rogers. Some of his most famous hits are "Broken Lady", "She Used to Be Somebody's Baby", "Talkin' to the Moon" and "All the Gold in California".
This Texas born star was raised in a musically inclined family. He and his brothers got a good dose of country gospel music from their very early childhood. Steve and Rudy along with Gatlin sang in the church choir, occasionally on the TV and radio. The trio’s first attempt on recording was a gospel album under the label Sword & Shield. After college Gatlin became a part of the band name The Imperials. The band’s show at Jimmy Dean's Las Vegas show linked up Gatlin with Dottie West. West was very much impressed by Gatlin’s songwriting skills and creativity. She called him onboard for “Once You Were Mise" and "You're the Other Half of Me". The credits on these songs earned Gatlin a demo tape that went all the way to Nashville. After relocating to the hub of country music he got associated with Kris Kristofferson.
In 1973 Larry Gatlin signed a deal with Monument for his debut studio album, The Pilgrim. His first top charting country song, "Sweet Becky Walker" paved way for more hits like "Delta Dirt". Rain Rainbow and Larry Gatlin with Family & Friends were his next studio efforts. The third album had a different and strong feel that came from the music and songs done by Gatlin’s brothers. The album was well received and managed to produce a wonder hit like "Broken Lady."

Gatlin entered a new phase of his career alongside his brothers. This phase was way more successful than his solo ventures and collaborations. The historical hits of the year 1977 like "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Statues without Hearts" and "Love Is Just a Game," made Gatlin and his brothers very popular. The rise to fame didn’t stop here; in 1978 Gatlin added his first solo number one his portfolio. The song "I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love" opened more doors to the star. He left Monument and shelled under Columbia where all his works featured music by the Gatlin Brothers Band. The ground breaking hit "All the Gold in California" made Larry the front man of the Gatlin Brothers Band. Leading from the front Larry took the Gatlin Brothers music to new heights of success.
The Gatlin Brothers' continued enjoying a long streak of success all the way to the end of the early nineties. The band gave phenomenal hits during the decade. The list includes songs like "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)” and "Talkin' to the Moon”. The band retired in 1991 with a farewell tour.
